POOLS Project

Sabhal Mor Ostaig and Cothrom have announced a joint initiative in Uist to tackle literacies for both Gaelic and English language trainees.  Entitled 'Multimedia Learning in Multilingual Communities' the project will bring together students and teachers of Gaelic and English as a Second Language.

With a support grant from the Scottish Executives's Learning Connections ICT Literacies Innovation Fund the project will focus on developing digital audio / video materials based on students own experiences and needs, either at work or in the wider community.  Samples of this work can be viewd at www.languages.dk

The project dovetails neatly with the European 'Producing Open Online Learning Systems' (POOLS) project,  Pools is a Leonardo II supported two year (2005-2007) project developing materials for language teaching and learning as well as teacher training courses based on pools of materials for nine languages; Basque, Danish, Dutch, English, Gaelic (Scottish), German, Lithuanian, Romanian, and Spanish.

Anyone who is interested in finding out more or in contributing to the project is urged to get in touch with Gordon Wells, who can be contacted at info@gordonwells.co.uk or visit his website at www.gordonwells.co.uk

New Build Nursery

The new build process continues as per schedule. In addition to training suites and an administration wing the centre will also provide a full time Gaelic Medium Nursery Unit in the Middle District of South Uist. The facility will offer all day care, including out of school and holiday care, to Cothrom students, staff and the community in general. This facility will also provide mother and toddler groups, parent support groups and allow students studying the Children’s Care & Learning Development SVQ programme appropriately supervised work placements with Cothrom. The nursery facility will also give students the opportunity to work in the same building as their children.

Child Care

Cothrom offers the Children’s Care & Learning Development at Levels 2 and 3, an ideal for those who wish to develop their skills and knowledge in the field of childcare. The course involves tutorials and work placements with local Croileagan and nurseries throughout the islands. Without the support and encouragement of these organisation’s students would be unable to gain important practical skills and knowledge.

If you would like to learn more about what Cothrom has to offer in the field of childcare or to enrol for the next session in September contact Kathleen on 01870 602831 or email:

New Build

The staff of Cothrom received an early Christmas present last year with the news that the European Regional Development Fund had awarded them £417,077, the last brick in the wall towards the construction of a custom built Community Learning & Development Centre. The centre planned for Ormiclate, South Uist at a cost of £1,080,834 now has all the funding in place.

The new centre will house training/tutorial rooms, a practical skills workshop,

administration offices, meeting rooms and an all day nursery. This new provision will give students the opportunity to train in the same building as their child or children in comfortable, suitable surroundings. The building will be designed to remove barriers to participation and be accessible to all members of the community.

Barbara MacDonald, Manager said “The staff have all worked incredibly hard this year to make this happen, we now look forward to the next stage of the process and a start on site in August 2006.”
