Cothrom ÒG
Cothrom Òg is our Gaelic medium childcare provision based at our Ormiclate campus. Originally developed in line with our adult learning programme the childcare centre was opened in order to support families and people returning to work, primarily mothers.
The staff at Cothrom Òg are are registered with the SSSC, highly trained, professional and committed to providing the range of interactions, experiences and spaces we need to provide for babies and young children to help them learn and grow best from their earliest days through to being a young child in early primary school (Realising the Ambition) We recognise that each child is a unique individual with an individual pattern of learning and pace of development, and we therefore employ a variety of teaching strategies to suit all the needs of the children. We recognise and value the role of the parents in their children’s learning and we work to create a genuine partnership with them. When staff and parents work together to support children’s learning, it can have a positive effect on children’s development and progress.
Cothrom Òg is independently operated but works closely with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in delivery of funded hours, and in providing places for children in receipt of the Sure Start programme. Staff also attend in-service training at CnES.

Cothrom Òg caters for children from the age of three months up to pre-school. The nursery facility is separated into two sections, our 0-3 room, and a playroom for age groups two-three and three-five. There is a sensory/ physical space also.
The baby room is welcoming, and contains a mix of play areas and a cosy space which is safe and comfortable for very young children. There is also a separate sleep room with cots, and a separate nappy changing area. |
Our nursery practitioners are fully trained and follow the Curriculum for Excellence guidelines to plan for 3-5's, and Realising to plan for the younger age group.
A play vision for Cothrom Og has been created following collaboration from parents, staff and the children and learning in Cothrom Og is based on strong play pedagogy and involving the children in the planning and delivery of their learning. The children participate in wide range of fun activities daily such as engagement with books, singing, arts and crafts, physical activity, music and movements, and food preperation . Outdoor learning is facilitated in our enriching outdoor spaces, which include large play equipment such as swings and a slide, music making equipment, sand and gravel play pits, a scramble hill and an engaging array of loose parts.
Through out the year we plan visits from parents, members of the community and the Cothrom team and enjoy trips in our local environment or linking into local social events.
