Dealing with phone scams

25/3/2020

Comments

With many people spending more time at home and without access to certain services there has unfortunately been a surge in phone scams lately.
There are so many online scammers that wait for the right moment to trap you with wrong intentions. These scammers might call you and claim to be from reputed companies. They might try to trick you into scams related to your insurance, banks, the lottery and other scenarios. Be careful with any information you give out over the phone, and you'll be in better shape to avoid such a scam.
Here are some steps we think are useful in keeping you and your personal information safe:
  • Do not confirm or deny your identity until you know who is calling. Do not share any information before confirming their identity.
  • Check the legitimacy of any agency, organisation, or company calling you (e.g. your bank, insurance, etc) by having them recite your membership or policy number to you. Often scam callers know your name and phone number, and sometimes even your address, so there is no use of having them confirm these to you.
  • If you are still unsure, tell the caller that you will phone back on the phone number listed on official documents, such as bank statements or policy paperwork.
  • Remember that no bank will ever phone you to ask about your account details, the same goes for many companies and organisations offering a service that your bank account is tied to, including insurance, electricity and oil provision, or anywhere else where you can pay online (including Amazon) or that don't offer paid services as such (for example Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram).

It is also worth noting that scammers use text messages and emails too. Always be wary of opening unsolicited messages.

Key worker registration for childcare provision

24/3/2020

Comments

The information below has been provided by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
Key Worker Registration
To help us to better shape the provision being made for key workers, we are introducing an online registration system for attendees from Wednesday 25th March and it is open now.
Each registration will be screened and a confirmation issued to parents if their children are eligible to attend school from Wednesday onwards.
The registration form can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/2UjT6Ys
  • Registration is open now for Wednesday onwards but we ask that key workers continue to self-identify on Tuesday morning.
  • We ask that employers work with their employees to identify their key workers, as per the definitions issued by Scottish Government and then ask staff to complete this registration form. Who is a Key Worker?
  • Any employee completing the form MUST have had confirmation from their employer that they are considered a key worker.
  • Parents are asked to complete the form themselves for their children once their employer has agreed their status.
  • If both parents are key workers, both will need to submit an application
  • The service can only be used by key workers who have NO OTHER CHILDCARE AVAILABLE.
  • You only need to complete the form once to access provision.
  • Registration closes to new applicants at midnight daily to allow attendance from the next day.
  • From Wednesday 25th March, pupils will only be able to attend if a registration form has been received and approved.
  • Any parents without internet access to complete the registration should seek the support of their employer to do so in the first instance.
  • The Comhairle will share registration information with employers for verification purposes.

COVID-19 response

17/3/2020

Comments

In light of the current coronavirus outbreak Cothrom has decided to temporarily halt the following events including our Knit & Natter group, the Ceòlas Gaelic classes, Gentle Movement, Financial Inclusion drop-in, and our Horticulture course. We are also temporarily not making collection and delivery bookings for furniture, however items already scheduled for delivery will take place given staff availability.

The Learning Centre is open as usual for essential education services (including ReStore and Cothrom Òg), and we are taking appropriate measures to ensure hygiene is maintained, which includes not allowing non-nursery staff entry to Cothrom Òg. We also ask all visitors, staff, volunteers, and learners who are attending to wash their hands regularly during their stay, as well as immediately after entering the building. Door handles throughout the building, but especially at Bùth ReStore, are regularly sanitised along with all hard surfaces.

These measures are in place to protect the people of our community who make use of the services Cothrom provide.
