This past week we have been sharing on our Facebook what we as an organisation do to reduce the amount going to landfill. If you missed any of our posts, you can see them all here: Monday, September 24th - The ReStore vanReStore has been equipped with a van since being set up in 2006 and has been actively collecting used furniture and textiles for restoration and recycling since. Last year alone we collected over 14000kg of furniture and 10000kg of textiles! Tuesday September 25th - Nursery crafts and wood recyclingThe nursery children visit ReStore weekly for craft sessions. During the hour that they're there they get to explore their creativity while improving motor- and communication skills. They also have a lot of fun! Last week they recycled some fabric by printing it and making it into aprons that they then got to wear in their play cafe. You can see the full blog post by clicking the photo below: The ReStore workshops are always busy with exciting projects. In woodworking Chris and some of our learners have been recycling wooden chairs into practical chopping boards with an interesting decorative pattern created from alternating the grain of the wood. Wednesday September 26th - UpcyclingYesterday we saw the upcycling from wooden chair to chopping board. In the textile and paint workshops we use donated materials to bring new leases of life into furniture, fabric, and various other materials. Earlier this year the children made lanterns out of glass jars that they decorated with pieces of napkins. They've also made bottle cap boats! If you'd like to see more of the furniture we have upcycled in our workshops, take a look at our latest newsletter by clicking the image below. If you'd like to try a bit of upcycling yourself, why not sign up to our community classes! We offer a five week course in upcycling starting on Thursday October 4th, either at 9:30am-11:30am or at 6:30pm-8:30pm. Give us a call on 01878 700910 if you'd like to sign up. Thursday september 27th - restorationThis oak sideboard was brought in to ReStore for restoration. The old varnish was stripped and the unit then sanded. A light oak stain was applied and the piece was finished with linseed oil. If you have furniture you think could do with some TLC, why not get in touch to learn more about our Repair+Return service. Friday september 28th - CompostYesterday the nursery took advantage of the sunny weather and went outside to learn about compost with Sue. You can read more about it and see all the photos on the blog through the link below.
